Some of you already know, but I attempted NaNoWriMo again this year. For those of you who don't know, NaNoWriMo started in November of 2000 when a group of people attempted to write a 50k word novel in just 30 days. Last year, there were over 100,000 participants from all over the globe, and this year, I tried my hand at it again. All in all, I've done a lot better that my completely pathetic attempt in '06. (I think I still have the less-than 400 words saved somewhere on my computer.) Since I'm taking a break from school this semester while my wife nearly-literally kills herself w/ her classes, I figured I would be able to devote time each day to writing. It's only 1,667 words a day to write 50,000 in a month, and there was even one day in the first week where I was only 1 day behind. I knew it would take a little effort to get back on track and make it all the way to the end, so I wasn't too worried about it.
Little did I know, that was as close as I was going to come to keeping up w/ the daily word count. I haven't written a single word in over a week, and there are only ten days left. If I were to succeed, I would have to write 4,000 words every day! Maybe I could, and maybe I couldn't, but I know I certainly won't. Not while working full-time, helping my wife w/ her classes, and trying to get our vacant apartments rented.
*Sigh* Well, maybe next year, when I'm in class on top of it. *Cringe* Okay, so not next year. The year after that, my wife should be done with her classes, but I'll still be taking mine. 2012, the world is supposed to end, so that stupid thing will probably get in the way. But the final day of the Mayan calendar isn't until December, so there's a chance that November will be open enough for me to write some number of words every day, but I'll probably be too busy making sure we have enough food and water stored to really focus on it.
Don't worry about this story, though. I'm going to post what I have on The Writings, and then continue posting as I continue writing. Hey, I got 10k words written, and that's more than I've written on any single work in a very, very long time. This story will be told, that I promise you. I've already written a couple chapters, so it's not like I can put it in a drawer, and wait for some vague future November to finish it.
So, check back in the next couple of weeks (months, most likely), and I'll post what I've written so far. I don't want to just throw it up immediately, because I want to make some amount of progress on it and have a bit of a buffer, so the next time I go a week w/o writing a single word, anyone regularly checking my site *cough* won't feel abandoned and alone on the 'tubes.
I'm going to continue blogging, as well. I'm going to see 2012tonight, so I can review that this weekend. And I've got a couple tickets to an advanced screening of Ninja Assassin and that movie has to rock. It has no choice. I'm seeing it with my buddy from the Bad Movie Review, so maybe I'll host an episode of Thoughts from a Car with him after the film. Nothing wrong with that.
So yeah, that's where I am. I just wanted to let the two of you know what happened to me this month, and why I'm not going to reach my 50,000 word goal by the 30th. I do want to get those words written by my birthday in January, at the latest. I will get this story written, as I said. This won't stop me, it'll just push me back a couple months. That's all. Thanks for keeping up with me, and all I ask in return is that you EMAIL ME!!! Anyone? Does anyone read this?!
